Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual challenge facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
