A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
