An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Had Just Met Supported Me Secure the Job That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a friend. Since my friend was exploring starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had planned a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a big ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, sat down, and started talking to fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did for a living, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I should apply for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that night. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his identity, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in multiple respects. I didn't possess the courage or self-assurance to reach out at an prestigious college and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that role at the university led me to a position in Switzerland where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
